From information gathered from officers who had fought with the partisans in Crete in the last war and others it had become clear that the agrimi, or wild goat of Crete, Capra hircus œgarus, was in danger of extinction.

page 330 note 1 The people of Sphakia will tell you that there are “plenty” of red-legged partridges. By European standards I found them extremely scarce, though during the war, when shooting was difficult, they were very plentiful.
