The Context and Definition of Upper Palaeolithic Industries in Panchpir, Orissa, India

Abstract

This paper provides a brief outline of the history of Palaeolithic research in India as a background to the description of the distinctive Upper Palaeolithic industries that have now been identified. The assemblages from three sites in Orissa are described to illustrate the character of the industry in the north-east of the subcontinent.

Cette étude fournit un bref canevas de l'histoire de la recherche paléolithique en Inde comme toile de fond pour la description des industries typiques du paléolithique supérieur qui ont maintenant été identifiées. On y décrit des assemblages provenant de trois sites à Orissa afin d'illustrer la nature de l'industrie dans le nord-ouest du souscontinent.

Zusammenfassung

Dieser Artikel gibt einen kurzen Überblick der Forschungsgeschichte des Paläolithikums in Indien. Dies stellt gleichzeitig die Grundlage zur Beschreibung der unterschiedlichen, bisher identifizierten spätpaläolithischen Industrien dar. Die Inventare von drei Fundstellen in Orissa werden zur Illustration des Charakters der Industrie im Nordosten des Subkontinents.

Este trabajo se abre con un breve esquema sobre la historia de la investigación del Paleolítico en la India que sirve de introducción a la descripción de las diversas industrias del Paleolítico Superior que han sido ahora identificadas. Se describen los grupos de material lítico de tres yacimientos en Orissa para ilustrar el carácter de la industria en el noroeste del subcontinente.
