EVOLVE Second Edition is a six-level English course that gets students speaking with confidence.
Drawing on insights from language teaching experts and real students, EVOLVE Second Edition is a general English course taking students from beginner to advanced levels (CEFR A1 - C1). This student-centered course covers all skills and focuses on the most effective and efficient ways to make progress in English.

Student-generated content
Student-generated content is one of the key features of EVOLVE. We spoke to more than 2,000 students from all over the world about the topics they would like to discuss in English and in what situations they would like to be able to speak more confidently.
Real Student videos
In Levels 1-4, we welcome a whole new cast of Real Students who feature in bite-sized videos throughout each book, ensuring that the material is interesting, relatable, and reflects the realities of our students’ lives. The Real Students come from a wide range of countries, making EVOLVE Second Edition a truly international coursebook. (Note: In Levels 5 and 6 these videos are called ‘Expert Speakers’ – non-native speakers living and working in the New York City area who are highly proficient in English).
'Time to speak' lesson
Every unit has a "Time to speak" lesson dedicated to developing speaking skills and building students’ confidence. Students collaborate on engaging, immersive tasks created to develop their speaking skills in a safe space where they can take risks with language.
Phone activities
The ‘Find it’ activities in the Student Book are bite-sized learning activities that involve using phones to do a little research or share content with the group. ‘Find it’ smartphone activities bring live content into the classroom. The activities are always optional, and the teacher can choose whether or not to include these as part of the lesson.
Corpus informed content
Corpus-informed content helps learners avoid common mistakes. The "Register check" highlights potential problem areas such as differences between written and spoken English, whist the "Accuracy check" highlights common learner errors.

Insider English
"Insider English" boxes focus on real-world communication and highlight informal language and colloquial expressions frequently used in everyday situations. Pronunciation activities are also provided to address aspects of pronunciation that most affect communication.
Integrated Teacher Development
EVOLVE integrates teacher development into every unit of the Teacher’s Edition. This unique approach enables teachers to develop as they teach, with opportunities for reflection and trying out new techniques. Each unit contains the following Teacher development:
• Introduction - a brief description of the focus and the two development activities in the unit.
• Two Teacher Development activities - They can be alternative instructions for Student’s Book activities, or extra lesson activities.
• Reflection questions appear at the end of each unit. They help you to keep track of your progress.
• Extra Reading texts – useful for further reading.
Digital content
EVOLVE’s online content is accessed on the Cambridge One platform.
Teachers and students can access a range of activities, resources, and tools to provide support with EVOLVE Second Edition (see ‘Components’ section for details). All the digital content on Cambridge One can be accessed using the activation code on the inside front cover of the Student Book.
What's new in the second edition
Speaking Companion
With EVOLVE Second Edition learners can focus on improving their conversational skills with the 'Speaking Companion', an AI-driven speaking tool. The immersive, personalised speaking practice is level appropriate and part of the digital pack content, so students automatically have access to it on Cambridge One.
• Enables learners to build speaking confidence in a safe practice environment.
• Allows learners to choose from a range of speaking topics. Some of the topics link to the unit themes of the course, and others offer wider practice in real world situations.
• Activities are engineered to ensure the AI avatar responds to learners with appropriate language.
• Learners will be able to see basic feedback at the end of each activity.
Enhanced grammar support
Additional grammar support, particularly in the early levels, makes learning more intuitive with extra practice to enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the language. Students now encounter examples of the language being used before analyzing the grammar rules. Where required, more context is provided within the grammar tables, with extra support for more complex points.
Refreshed design
A contemporary design gives EVOLVE Second Edition an eye-catching, fresh look. All-new unit-opener photos help students engage with a range of themes.
New Reading & Listening
A selection of the reading and listening texts have been updated. The new texts are contemporary, high-interest, and feature topics from around the world.
New videos
100% new Real Student videos - These videos (Levels 1-4) feature students from a wide range of countries and cultures. In these bite-sized videos, students discuss up-to-date topics relevant to their lives.
Updated documentary videos - Several of the documentaries have been refreshed at every level to ensure content is current and of high interest. They can be found on the Cambridge One platform.
Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and this is reflected in EVOLVE Second Edition. Sustainability themes and content are embedded throughout the course.
Enhanced accessibility
Several key design changes have been made to the Student Books to make the content more accessible for SEN (Special Educational Needs) learners. These changes include:
• more straight rather than tilted type
• extraneous colors and icons removed
• simplified typography
• text is now in one column to simplify reading order where possible.
Personalized Learning
‘Personalized Learning’ on Cambridge One helps teachers provide additional reading and listening practice by recommending easy-to-assign, bite-size activities tailored to students’ individual ability. It adapts to each student by adjusting the level of challenge as they complete the reading and listing activities. Our algorithm presents recommended content to each learner that is a good match for their ability.
Content can be completed on any type of device and learners are provided with an indication of ability in reading and listening against the CEFR.
‘Personalized Learning’ is an additional component available to all EVOLVE Second Edition learners. It can be added to the course and assigned to learners by their teacher.
