Cambridge University Press has announced that the Journal of the Society for American Music (JSAM) has been selected for coverage in the Thomson Reuters Arts & Humanities Citation Index®. The Citation Index recognises journals of key importance in their subject area and provides a guide to the essential must-read titles in the field.
Launched in 2007, JSAM is an international, peer-reviewed journal that explores all aspects of American music and music in the Americas. It is dedicated to supporting scholarship that transcends disciplinary boundaries, cutting across historical musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, cultural theory, and American studies.
Although only in its third year, JSAM has already achieved wide recognition. Laurie Stras won the ASCAP Deems Taylor award for her article "White Face, Black Voice: Race, Gender, and Region in the Music of the Boswell Sisters" (published in Vol. 1, No. 2) and Christopher Reynolds won the H. Colin Slim Award for his article "Porgy and Bess: 'An American Wozzeck'" which was published in the inaugural issue (Vol. 1, No. 1). Find out more about JSAM's awards here.
The Executive Director of the Society for American Music, Mariana Whitmer, commented on the announcement: “The Society is pleased to learn that our journal has been selected for indexing in this important reference tool. It solidifies the significant position of American music on the scholarly agenda and offers the opportunity to extend the influence of our work beyond its current environment.”
Founded in 1975 as the Sonneck Society, the mission of the Society for American Music is to stimulate the appreciation, performance, creation and study of American musics of all eras and in all their diversity. The Society is a constituent member of the American Council of Learned Societies and membership is open to anyone interested in American music. Further information can be found at american-music.org.
