Oldest bookshop site in England opens newest learning centre

A brand new addition to the oldest bookshop site in England was launched on Monday, 19 October 2009, bringing it firmly in to the 21st century.

Cambridge University Press opened a new venue called The Learning Centre, as part of its flagship Bookshop in the heart of Cambridge City Centre.

For the first time, the Centre brings together a wide selection of Cambridge’s English language teaching titles and educational resources in one place, for teachers and students alike.

All of Cambridge’s schools resources for school learners under the age of 18 now sit alongside all of their courses and educational resources for English learners of all ages.

The new shop means that titles are displayed in a more user-friendly way, so all of the courses are kept together and the grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary books are all in one place. The primary learning courses are also separate from the adult learning courses, with much more room to display the books so that they can be found quickly and easily.

The Learning Centre also has new computer terminals, allowing customers to experience online and e-products, an interactive whiteboard to try out new cutting-edge educational technology, and, as always, the knowledgeable and friendly Bookshop staff will always be on hand to assist and guide customers around the new store and help with any queries.

Cambridge University Press Bookshop Manager Cathy Ashbee says: “The new Learning Centre is a fantastic addition to the Bookshop and I’m sure it will become a real asset for teachers and students in Cambridge. It provides a really modern and comfortable venue in which teachers and students can browse at their leisure and take time to find out what Cambridge has to offer.

“We really want to encourage both students and teachers to come in when they have a minute and spend some time looking around, as we stock a huge range of books and educational materials, and there’s also the new computers and interactive whiteboard where they can actually try out the e-products for themselves.”

The Cambridge University Press Bookshop stands on the oldest bookshop site in the country, as books have been sold here since at least 1581.

The Learning Centre is open the same hours as the Bookshop, Monday - Saturday 9 -5.30pm, Sunday 11am - 5pm.
