S-1404. WAGNER, Clinton, 1837-1914.

First edition. In a paper originally read before on New York County Medical Society on 25 April 1881, Wagner explains the importance of nasal respiration in regulating the temperature of inspired air, in filtering impurities, etc. By contrast, he notes the hazards consequent on the habit of breathing through the mouth. Having served as an Army surgeon in the Territory of Idaho, Wagner confirms the earlier observations of George Catlin (#575, 576): “In one hundred and fifty tribes visited by Catlin … containing over two millions of people, cases of deafness, dumbness, spinal curvature, and deaths from teething and diseases of the respiratory passages, were almost unknown. He attributes the exemption from these ailments, so very common in civilized communities, solely to the habit of breathing through the nose. My own more limited but very practical experience among the Indians sustains fully the statements of Catlin” (p. 10-11). Cover-title: Mouth-breathing.

An 1859 medical graduate of the University of Maryland, Wagner was “surgeon-in-chief of the Second Division of the Fifth Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac; prime mover in the establishment of several military hospitals, including the first floating hospital on Western waters; founder of the New York Laryngological Society; first professor of laryngology and rhinology in the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital; inventor of many surgical instruments and the author of voluminous literature relating to his specialty” (JAMA, 1914, 63:2244).
