Summary
A 59-year-old, 173 cm (5’8”), 75 kg man is scheduled for orthotopic liver transplantation. The patient was diagnosed with alcoholic cirrhosis 12 years ago. His current MELD score is 24. He has associated portal hypertension, ascites requiring regular large-volume paracentesis, mild encephalopathy, and esophageal varices that required banding 2 years ago. He quit drinking alcohol 2 years ago. His past medical history is significant for hypertension and noninsulin-dependent type 2 diabetes mellitus. He is a current smoker with mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). His medications include propranolol, metformin, famotidine, lisinopril, furosemide, lactulose, rifaximin, and a multivitamin.
