Summary
Aus seiner oligarchischen quelle hat Aristoteles die specificirte berechnung herübergenommen, dass in Athen 20000 bürger ihren unterhalt durch den staat fanden (24, 3 vgl. I s. 153). er hat dabei vieles einfach hingestellt was im fünften jahrhundert unmittelbar verstündlich war, aber zum teil uns selbst zweifelhaft bleibt, die wir doch die älteren institutionen besser kennen als die Athener der demosthenischen zeit. erschwert wird das urteil durch die verderbnisse und lücken des textes; aber die rechnung ist so merkwürdig, dass ein versuch gemacht werden muss. bequemer ist es freilich, das ganze als ungereimt wegzuwerfen.
Die erste reihe von zahlen ist heil und verständlich; 6000 richter, 1600 schützen, 1200 reiter, 500 ratsherren, 500 werftwächter, 50 burgwächter. die posten steigen vom höheren zum niederen herab und ergeben 9850 mann. die schützen und die reiter beziffert auch Thukydides (2, 13) so hoch; es ist die etatsmässige stärke dieser stehenden truppen. 1200 reiter schliesst, wie Thukydides genauer angibt, die (selbstverständlich bürgerlichen) schützen zu pferde ein; später hat Athen niemals wieder eine so starke cavallerie gehabt, früher aber, als es drei hipparchen gab (CIA IV p. 184) vielleicht eine noch höhere. die schützensind von uns früher mit den gekauften Skythen notwendig verwechselt worden, weil das vierte jahrhundert diese stehende truppe des bürgerheeres nicht mehr kennt; aber jetzt sind die inschriftlichen belege nicht mehr vereinzelt.
