Summary
It is clear that cyberspace is becoming a new battlefield. In 1999, during NATO’s intervention against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, there was already use of network attacks on both sides. The 2008 Russia–Georgia conflict also saw both sides employing computer network operations, which were used alongside and formed part of conventional military operations. Then there is the infamous and disruptive Stuxnet attack in 2010, which, although not carried out in an armed conflict, demonstrated how cyber weapons could be designed and used, and the effects they might create.
