Summary
The walls that separated the monastery from the secular world in the sixteenth century were of brick, stone, and mortar. But in the twenty-first century neither the walls of separation, not their dissolution, need be physical or at all visible. Political and cultural conflict, corporatization, commodification, the ubiquitousness of the digital that makes physical place irrelevant have all dissolved separateness by bringing the external world into the campus and by extending the role of the university into close partnerships with government, business, and community. All, in a sense, dissolve the cytoplasm of the university into the world surrounding it.
