Summary
Hydrodynamics and benthic biology represent a very broad field encompassing many possible levels of hierarchical organization and subjects. Thus, it is not possible for any author(s) to have a detailed personal knowledge and experience of all the subjects discussed herein. Nor does the book seek to cover every subject which could be included; for example, there is little on corals or freshwater biology, although we have occasionally mentioned such examples to illuminate the points we are trying to make. The subject matter of each chapter is also limited to matters where hydrodynamics are centrally involved. Hence, in Chapter 3, for example, larval biology is limited to dispersal and settlement where flow is clearly important, and our overview is not intended to replace the more complete reviews of this subject which are available.
It became clear to us early in the genesis of this book that our topic, at most hierarchical levels of benthic biology, was at a very early stage in the learning curve. Indeed, one of the reviewers suggested that we wait for a few years to begin the book in the hope that by then the subject would have reached a firmer theoretical footing. As the evidence in front of you will suggest, we did not take this advice because of our own interests and agenda.
