Summary
Christian icons are not as often mentioned in Byzantine chronicles as we might expect, nor in the contexts that we normally envision them to be, given their presumed importance. Even when the texts describe theological controversies, martyrdoms, or the building and endowment of churches, several of them are intriguingly silent as to the images that may or may not have accompanied those events.
