Summary
The study of anarchism and syndicalism in China and their historical role has to confront several problems. Politically, neither in the PRC (People’s Republic of China) nor in Taiwan during its GMD (Guomindang / ‘KMT’ / National Party) period (1945–90s) were these topics welcome, and in consequence sources were hidden away or censored, and, in any case, were not easy to access, while former activists were wary of talking openly about a past they had been discouraged from remembering. It is only since the 1980s that a limited easing has set in on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
