Summary
The facts and figures in this appendix are meant to provide an overview of public cultural policy and the size of the cultural sector in the Netherlands. The appendix has several sections providing data on:
1. Population data and administrative organisation of the Netherlands
2. Public expenditures on culture and the arts
3. Distribution of cultural amenities over the country
4. The labour market for arts and culture in the Netherlands
5. Participation in amateur arts and media
6. Private donations to culture
While the data provide a backdrop for the information in this volume, the set-up of the appendix allows for it to be used independently to gain insight into Dutch cultural policy.
Boekman Foundation and the Arts Index Netherlands
The facts and figures in this appendix are compiled by researchers of the Boekman Foundation, who are also responsible for the Arts Index Netherlands. The Arts Index Netherlands is a comprehensive database of facts and figures on arts and culture in the Netherlands, ranging from the number of cinema tickets sold and the total income of public libraries to the percentage of people that practice amateur arts. Since its launch in 2013, the index presents reliable, relevant and longitudinal data on the Dutch cultural field every other year, in cooperation with over 30 organisations that have information available. Population Data and Administrative Organisation of the Netherlands
Data retrieved from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Its population statistics show ‘with which country someone is closely related given their own country of birth and that of their parents. For someone with a first-generation foreign background, the origin is indicated as the country of birth of that person. For someone with a second-generation foreign background, the origin is indicated as the country of birth of the mother of that person. If the mother's country of birth is the Netherlands, then the origin is indicated as the father's country of birth’ (translated from Statistics Netherlands, 2018, ‘onderwerpen/classificaties’ [subjects/classifications]). The figure shows the share of inhabitants of a municipality who were born in a non-Western country or who were born in the Netherlands who have at least one parent born in a non-Western country. Non-Western countries include countries in Africa, South America or Asia (excluding Indonesia and Japan) or Turkey.
