Why do we review?

At the beginning of the book you may remember all the steps on the lovely circle of the data-driven decision model (Figure 2.1). The circle is one of the most important aspects of the data-driven decision model, and this approach in particular. We aren't simply putting in place a set of processes; we’re committing to continuously reviewing and questioning these processes (and putting in new processes). The circular approach is fundamental to ensuring that you are genuinely able to make the most of your move towards data-driven decision making, and creating an ongoing culture of service development. Without committing to reviewing and starting the process again we can easily fall into the well-known trap of not using our data, collecting unnecessary data, and missing out on opportunities to improve efficiency and automation.

The act of reviewing is vital to ensuring you take the most strategic approach to your service delivery and plans. During your review you may find uncomfortable truths about your processes and that there is a lot of work to be done. However, you can't be afraid to face these facts head on and sometimes start again when necessary. If your processes, data or approachesare not working for your service, team and strategy then make a change. That's exactly what your review is for.

What do we review?

Essentially, we need to review any and all practices related to your data-driven decision processes. From how you collect your data, to new technologies available, to how you use your data – it all needs to go under the review lens. Depending on how embedded data-driven decision making is in your organisation and how long you have had your processes in place, it likely isn't going to be a small task. Therefore treat it like an annual project; either review various facets of the process throughout the year or tackle it all at once in a dedicated space of time. Who has the time to dedicate to this I hear you ask? If you take the time to plan your review and approach you can find many ways to save time and to incorporate the review into current processes.
