Summary
DARTINGTON
A small number of rates survive for this parish located two miles north of Totnes. The tower is the only vestige left of the ancient parish church at Dartington Hall, the home of the Champerknowne family throughout the period of these rates. The rate of 1593 outlines the parish including Northford, an elusive manor. Twenty-six men and women were assessed for the military rate whereas the church rate a year later involved nearly four times more parishioners.
