Summary
The diagnosis of pregnancy-associated breast cancer is associated with serious mental strains on young patients and also leads to diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties on the part of the treating physicians. The patients need to be thoroughly informed about diagnosis, treatment and associated risks during pregnancy, as well as breastfeeding, fertility and appropriate procedures for fertility preservation. Compared with non-pregnant women, pregnancy itself doesn’t seem to significantly worsen the prognosis and outcome of breast cancer; however, breast cancer affecting young patients may be characterized by higher diesease aggressiveness and higher risk of metastasis. However, with few exceptions most diagnostic and therapeutic procedures can be implemented relatively safely.
