Summary
January 23rd, 1873. Fine.
At eleven o'clock in the morning we went by carriage to the Christofle gold, silver, and bronzeware factory. Situated in a street near the Conservatoire, it is marked by a large bronze statue which was cast in these works. The factory has an unrivalled reputation on the continent of Europe and even bears comparison with the Elkington works in Birmingham.
This factory makes all kinds of household goods with such metals as silver, copper, nickel and brass, and uses galvanising devices to coat surfaces with gold and silver. It also produces bayonets. The bayonets in France are unlike those produced in Britain and America and different, too, from German ones. All countries compete in their industries, and rather than shamefully stooping to use a rival's goods they always turn to domestic products to supply their needs. The free peoples of Europe nurture their spirit of independence, which fills them with a righteous sense of pride.
In the record of Birmingham we saw the reputation which Japanese damascene and cloisonné work enjoys in the West, and these are frequently imitated in Europe. Inside the factory items of cloisonné enamel from China and Japan are displayed to serve as samples. Our hosts complimented the Japanese ware as being even more beautiful than the Chinese.
