Summary

The Regiment of Sir Lewis Dyve. Sir Lewis was Colonel of a regiment of royalist foot. By a commission dated 13 August 1642, at York, the Earl of Lindsey appointed Gervase Holies “Captain of one Company of one hundred Foot under the Regiment of Sir Lewis Dives, Knight and Colonel of one thousand foot” and by another commission dated 16 September at Derby appointed Hoiles “Sergeant Major of one hundred and forty Foot in that Regiment whereof Sir Lewis Dive, Knight is Colonel.” Holies, however, left the regiment later in the year on being given a commission dated 7 December at Oxford, to raise for the King a regiment of foot and be its Colonel : his relative William Hoiles, who by a commission dated 13 August 1642, had been appointed a Lieutenant in the company of Captain John Smith in Sir Lewis’ regiment, was, by a commission dated 7 December 1642, appointed a Captain in this new regiment.

According to the royalist, Symonds, the officers of the Sir Lewis’ regiment at the time of Edgehill were :—

Maior Gervas Holies of Grymsby Com. Lincoln Esqr.

Captain John Smyth of Somersby Lincoln, Gent.

Captain Gabriel Savill of Wakefield in Yorkesh., Gent.

Captain Henr. Peyton.

Captain Rich. Nevill.

Captain Arth. Slingsby.

In May 1643 eight companies of the regiment were at Abingdon and the officers named were :—
