Summary

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a close analysis of the fourth chapter of The Gay Science, “Sanctus Januarius,” and to show how it transitions from the free spirit project to Nietzsche’s tragedy in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, in which Zarathustra teaches the eternal recurrence. Here, Nietzsche has effectively reversed the relationship between science and art. In contrast to Human, science is now subordinate to art, and art is now celebrated for its capacity to affirm life.
