Summary
The unspoken belief that “women are the downfall of men” actually subsumes an array of underlying beliefs, depending on how and why it motivates men to step back when it comes to the comprehensive inclusion of women in mentoring and instruction, professional networking opportunities – and everything in between. Perhaps this view was most pronouncedly not spoken when Mike Pence famously said in 2002 that he would never be seen dining alone with a woman who was not his wife. This immediately sparked conversation and debate about just how many men felt it was “safer,” for any number of reasons, to keep a certain measure of distance between themselves and the women with whom they worked.
