Summary
The term body integrity identity disorder refers to a condition characterized by the persistent desire to acquire a physical disability, for example, amputation, paraplegia or other severe disability such as blindness. Individuals who suffer from this condition typically report a desire to achieve their sense of ‘true self’ and that to be successful in obtaining the desired amputation or disability would enable them to feel ‘whole’ or ‘complete’.
