This list of Sheriffs, Wardens, and Mayors of London from the first year of the reign of King Richard I (1189) until 1596–97 is organised by regnal years starting with the first year of Richard I. This list was started by the same scribe as the one writing the early pages of the Register, at the same time as the main part of the Register, but placed on the final folios of the 400. The amount of space needed was well calculated for several hundred years, as many more years could have been added on f. 400r and f. 400v had anyone continued. The first scribe has compiled a list of names from 1189 until 1418/1420. Succeeding scribes, those who have written succeeding sections of the Register, have in their turn added to the list for the further years that they were dealing with in the main part of the Register. Changes of hand are signalled in this edition by footnotes.

Red-ink headings are given for each monarch, giving a date for the first year of the reign in AD terms; the number of each successive regnal year then heads the names of the officers for that year. These red-ink headings were written in later, replacing earlier black-ink indications of date (which occasionally remain visible).

Only sheriffs are listed for the earliest years, the first Mayor listed being “Petrus filius Aldewini” for the year 10 John (1208–09). All other sources give his name as Henry Fitz Alwyn, and as Mayor for many more years before and after this date. In this list the next Mayor noted is “Rogerus filius Alani” for the year 15 John (1213–14), whereas other sources give him as Mayor from 1211 until 1214. Thereafter the Register’s list of mayors corresponds for the most part with other sources, all differences being signalled by footnotes.

This list, giving the names of sheriffs and mayors over such a long period, all the years from 1189 to 1596, is unusual for its time. In medieval documents short lists are found, such as the one in the Liber Custumarum of Mayors and sheriffs from the fourth year of Edward I’s reign until the fourteenth year of Edward II’s reign (1275–1320), and the somewhat longer one edited by Riley in Chronicles of the Mayors and Sheriffs of London, which moves from a list to become a prose account.
