Summary
Over the past fifteen years, the renewable energy sector has experienced an unprecedented boom. In 2017, renewable energy accounted for an estimated 70 per cent of net additions to global power generation, with $US298 billion invested in new renewable generation capacity (including hydropower). This continues the trend witnessed over the past five years of renewables attracting more than double the annual investment into new fossil fuel generation capacity. Nor does the boom show any sign of abating. As part of the adoption of the Paris Agreement, 145 Parties included domestic action to support renewable energy to help mitigate and adapt to climate change as part of their Nationally Determined Contributions. Further, 109 Parties to the Paris Agreement provided quantifiable targets for renewables.
