Summary
Unlike nearly all his fellow major poets, Longfellow had a career as a professor of literature, first at Bowdoin College, in Maine, then at Harvard. He traveled widely in Europe and studied many languages. The most popular American poet of his time, he is best known for “The Village Blacksmith” and “Paul Revere’s Ride,” as well as the long narratives Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha. He also translated a great deal of poetry, including Dante’s Divine Comedy.
