General books on Singapore English
Tongue (1979) is the first substantial work on English in Singapore. It continues to make a lot of sense even after all these years, and it is still well worth reading. Platt and Weber (1980) is also an important early work on Singapore English. More recently, Gupta (1994) is an influential book that documents in some detail the language development among children in Singapore as well as providing a general overview of Singapore English. Brown (1999) offers a comprehensive and authoritative list of words and features that occur in Singapore English, and it is an essential reference work for anyone interested in the subject. Low and Brown (2005) is an introductory textbook on the history, sociology, grammar and phonetics of Singapore English which is a valuable resource for all scholars as it covers a wide range of topics in some detail.
There are a number of edited volumes that offer collections of articles on Singapore English. Crewe (1997) contains some classic early papers on Singapore English. More recently, Foley et al. (1998) is a valuable set of overviews of various aspects of English in Singapore, though it is a pity nobody took on the role of editing the volume to ensure greater consistency between the different contributions. Gopinathan et al. (1998) is a collection of important articles about various facets of language use in Singapore, particularly sociolinguistic issues and summaries of shifts in official policy.
