Part I - THE STONE AGE
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 22 September 2009
Summary
Out of the trees but not free of the animal kingdom, humanity takes to wandering and cave life. Harsh, unpredictable living means equally unpredictable death. Any gradual dying of the person must find a more symbolic space in which to occur, hence giving important impetus to ideas about the otherworld journey.
