Part 1 - Discovering Collections
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 28 April 2022
Summary
First, let's explore the collections themselves. Objects in Special Collections can include any format that has ever been used for communication, from papyri to digital files. Librarians need to understand the materials and construction of these objects to make the right choices in preserving them; understanding their context and creation helps with acquiring, marketing and sharing them with readers. Some Special Collections roles in national or research libraries require doctoral-level expertise in a format or historical period. Roles in smaller libraries are more generalist and such services are less likely to own or acquire the widest range of materials.
