Summary
Given the enormous consequences of violent and aggressive behavior, we are in great need of effective treatment strategies that can reduce violence and aggression. Unfortunately, most research trials exclude patients who are violent or aggressive, so establishing the best treatment strategy for these patients is difficult and must rely in part upon clinical experience. Chapter 3 aims to explain the options available for the treatment of violence and aggression, including antipsychotics (including high-dose antipsychotic treatment), mood stabilizers, antidepressants, stimulants, adrenergic blockers, opiate antagonists, and benzodiazepines. It is important to note that there is no FDA-approved agent for the treatment of chronic aggression; thus, all of the treatment strategies described in this chapter should be initiated with not only caution, but also documented patient consent whenever possible.
