Summary

after three weeks of snow even morning folds

this hollow between mountains in lengthening shadow

but when you follow me back to our snowquilted bed

the yew beside us bends a furred branch

to our window lowers a cardinal

who spreads an exaltation of red feather and wing

as we fall into thick drifts each olive cone

swings on yewstem when the cardinal trills

as if today day of most darkness

each cone could disclose nested red lips

these latent arils open seedcups

a multitude of mouths tongues tumbling toward river

and the cardinal tilts head flutter and wing

yew branch waves a beacon

a flame as I follow the bright limbs of you

spiral through cloud and snow out from our center

our horizon beginning even now

to remember the thrill oflight
