The finite element method (FEM) is indispensable in modeling and simulation in various engineering and physical systems, including structural analysis, stress, strain, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, dynamics, eigenproblems, design optimization, sound propagation, electromagnetics, and coupled field problems. This textbook integrates basic theory with real-life, design-oriented problems using ANSYS, the most commonly used computational software in the field. For students as well as practicing engineers and designers, each chapter is highly illustrated and presented in a step-by-step manner. Fundamental concepts are…

Mohamed S. Gadala,University of British Columbia, Vancouver
Mohamed Gadala is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), with forty years' experience in academia/industry. Currently, he is head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Abu Dhabi University in the United Arab Emirates. His research focuses on computational/experimental mechanics, finite element analysis (FEA), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Professor Gadala taught in many universities world-wide including twenty-six years at UBC. He has twelve years' industrial experience in Canada/USA and published more than 200 refereed papers, three patents, and fifteen key-note presentations. He developed and taught FEA courses in the University of Michigan, UBC and other universities. Dr Gadala was appointed Patrick Campbell Chair in Design (two terms) in UBC; established the PACE lab (Partners for Advancement of CAE Education); won various industry-university awards including the NSERC University-Industry Synergy award; and directed the development of the FEA commercial program and writing its manuals.
