Summary
This chapter analyzes the formal affordances of the historical summaries in greater detail. The narrative schema describes a narrative pattern that is dynamic, generative, abbreviated, and easily replicable. The “functional memory” or the “usable past” of a society identifies the shared narratives that are frequently told and retold within a community as well as their mutually recognized symbols. Finally, the historical summaries are presented as performance texts: they are brief and thus easily repeatable, are often framed with speech language, and in narrative texts are situated between a speaking group and an audience who interacts with the material in some way. This chapter concludes with an analysis of Pss 135 and 136 to demonstrate these three formal features of the historical summary, their use of a narrative schema, functional memory, and performance, in action.
