1 The literal translation is Ama, place, nyana, get, bo, him, and not ‘one of the royal blood’ as suggested on p. 70 and p. 162, and it is a name applied to the heads of most villages in the Brass and Degema divisions. It corresponds to the Onyeishi ale (he, head, land) of Ibo and Oboŋ Iduŋ (head, place) of Ibibio villages.
