Special Issue on Measuring and Enhancing Resilience of United States Rural Communities in the Context of Climate Variability
19 Dec 2023 to 12 Jun 2024

The Agricultural and Resource Economics Review (ARER) welcomes submissions to a forthcoming special issue, which is related to an upcoming Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association (NAREA) workshop.

Resilience describes the ability of an individual or community to anticipate, absorb, and recover from a negative shock. This workshop is motivated by the need to better understand the implications of increasing climate variability for the resilience of communities in the United States, acknowledging that implications can be either direct, such as the impacts of negative shock events on individuals and communities where they occur, or indirect, such as impacts on communities connected or adjacent to those experiencing shocks.

This special issue invites research papers analyzing climate adaptation and mitigation policies related to rural communities. The special issue will focus on (1) measuring resilience of rural communities in different contexts, (2) anticipating and identifying the direct and indirect impacts of climate variability on rural communities in the United States, and (3) contributing evidence towards policies to improve rural community resilience. We welcome submissions based on a diverse approaches and methods (e.g., empirical, and qualitative analyses, simulation models, case studies, and systematic reviews). We welcome submissions from various relevant disciplines, including applied economics, sociology, regional science, and other sciences, provided the studies are accessible to scientists from different disciplines.
