תורת השמיטות היא אחד מן הסודות האזוטריים המרכזיים והשנויים במחלוקת בתולדות הקבלה. תורה אסכטולוגית זו מציבה תפיסת זמן מחזורית שפעימותיה הקוסמיות קוצבות את קיומו של העולם ומעמידות אותו על שבע שמיטות, שבעה מחזורים קוסמיים בני שבעת אלפים שנה, שביניהם חורבן המתחולל בכל אלף שביעי, עד ליובל הגדול, שנת החמישים אלף, שבו עתידה ההוויה כולה להיבלע ולשוב למקורה.
