California has exercised a haunting fascination on men’s imaginations ever since the days of Cortés. During the course of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, at least twenty expeditions served as a prelude to the occupation, first of the Lower California Peninsula in 1697, and then of New, or Upper, California in 1769. A complete list of these voyages and attempted entradas has not yet been made. Suffice it to say that we are far from possessing the accounts of all the efforts that were made to discover and colonize those regions from 1535 to 1769.
In 1769 New, or Upper, California was first visited by the pionéer founders of its missions and presidios. They had come from Loreto in the Lower California Peninsula, after an arduous trip of over two-hundred leagues over barren mountains. This was the famous expedition of Serra and Portolá, which marks the beginning of the Spanish colonization with the founding of San Diego and the exploration of all the coast up to San Francisco. That year records the birth of Upper California.

VI. Return to Monterey, 1772.
VII. The sea expedition as far as the 55° of latitude.
Here are the manuscripts and their present locations:
A) The originals of I, II, III, V, and VI were sent by Palou to the Franciscan Province of Majorca, with copies of the Vida in 1787 or 1788, together with the 43 divisions of the diario written by Serra. No one has yet been able to locate these prototype texts.
B) Palou had a transcript made of the diaries I, II, III, V, VI, and VII in his work: Noticias de Nueva California which he wrote in Monterey and San Francisco, between 1774 and 1783. This lengthy manuscript was kept in the archives of San Fernando in Mexico. It was transcribed under the supervision of Figueroa between 1790 and 1792. See volumes VI and VII of the Memorias para la Historia de Nueva España. The compiler has certified the fidelity of his transcript: “a faithful copy of the original,” he states, in so far as was “permitted by the wretched and difficult handwriting of the original.” The latter has never again been seen. We have formulated elsewhere the reservations which must be made, on the one hand, concerning Figueroa’s copies, and, on the other hand, particularly as to the two editions published in Mexico City and San Francisco, in 1837 and 1874. An English edition, based on Figueroa’s manuscript, has been published by Bolton., Herbert E. Palou’s Historical Memoirs of New California (Berkeley, 1926. 4 vols.)Google Scholar. It would be worthwhile to compare Figueroa’s text with the manuscript kept in the Newberry Library, R. L. Butler, Check List, no. 1193. (264 pp.) This text is a photostat copy, for the manuscript belongs to a private collection. Furthermore, there exists another text of the diary of Garcés, which formerly belonged to the collection of Joaquín Icazbalceta. It belongs now to the University of Texas. See no. 1906 in the Guide to the Latin American Manuscripts in the University of Texas Library, edited by Carlos E. Castañeda (Cambridge, 1939). Its title reads:
Diario formado por el Padre Fray Francisco Garcés, hijo del Colegio de la Santa Cruz de Querétaro, en el viage que ha hecho el año de 1775 por mandado del Excelentísimo Señor Don Frey Antonio María Bucareli y Ursúa, Teniente General, Virrey, Governador y Capitán General de esta Nueva España, intimado por su carta 2 de enero del mismo año, determinado en la Junta de Guerra hecha en México en 28 de noviembre del año antecedente; y asímismo mandado por el Reverendo Padre Fray Romualdo Cartagena, Guardián de dicho Colegio en carta de 20 de enero de 75, y por su succesor el Reverendo Padre Diego Ximénez en carta de 17 de febrero del mismo año… 1775. (137 pp.) This manuscript, which rather seems to be the original, is clearly preferable to the Seville copy, and might be compared to it with advantage, especially for a critical edition.
