A Brief History of Underwater Archaeology in the Maya Area

Abstract

Underwater archaeology in the Maya area during the twentieth century has gradually evolved from a avocational activity whose primary focus was on the recovery of artifacts to a subdiscipline with more focused professional concerns. The present synthesis outlines the history of underwater research throughout the Maya area, including projects at pre-Hispanic sites in the lowlands and highlands, as well as the exploration of offshore historic wrecks. It concludes with a brief assessment of the current state of this research.

Resumen

En el transcurso del siglo actual, la arqueologia subacuática en el área maya se ha transformado gradualmente, empezando como una actividad de aficionados cuyo principal objetivo era la recuperación de artefactos, hasta la época actual en la que ha emergido como una subdisciplina con un enfoque profesional. Presentamos aquí una síntesis de la historia de investigaciones subacuáticas a través del área maya, incluyendo proyectos en sitios de las tierras bajas y altas, asi como exploraciones de naufragios históricos en las costas e islas de la península. Concluímos con una breve evaluación del estado actual de las investigaciones subacuáticas.
