Anthropologues et historiens étudient depuis longtemps les faits de structuration symbolique de l'espace, et plus particulièrement la polarité des mains. Les indianistes ne peuvent qu'admirer les recherches accomplies sur ces questions en des domaines où les méthodes sont mieux assurées et les instruments de travail plus nombreux, chez les hellénistes par exemple, auxquels nous ferons référence plus loin. On voudrait ici contribuer à promouvoir l'idée que, dans le domaine des études indiennes aussi, l'histoire et l'anthropologie doivent collaborer.
