L'historiographie anglaise continue de manifester une extraordinaire vitalité. Il ne se passe pas de semaine sans qu'on ne publie outre-Manche ou outre-Atlantique une monographie ou un ouvrage de synthèse éclairant d'un jour nouveau une question importante à laquelle on croyait avoir apporté une solution « définitive ». C'est dire combien est difficile la tâche de présenter un tableau d'ensemble des dernières recherches de l'érudition. On s'expose inéluctablement au reproche d'avoir omis un ouvrage ou un article importants. J'ai essayé dans la recension qui suit d'échapper à ce reproche mais je ne prétends nullement y avoir réussi.
J'ai été obligé, eu égard à la durée de la période envisagée, recouvrant près de deux siècles, de répartir la production historiographique postérieure à 1965 en deux groupes qui correspondent approximativement à des grandes phases chronologiques.
