La présente étude a deux buts :

1. Elle cherche à définir et à clarifier les principes et les méthodes de l'application des théories et de la technique de la psychanalyse freudienne à l'étude des phénomènes historiques, non pas afin de démontrer une fois de plus que la psychanalyse éclaire en effet tout comportement humain, ni même afin de contribuer (par le moyen de l'analyse des phénomènes historiques) au développement de la science psychanalytique, mais pour des fins nettements historiques. Ce que notre étude cherchera à préciser c'est la contribution que la psychanalyse peut apporter à l'étude de l'histoire par l'historien, pour des fins historiques. Autrement dit, la partie théorique de cette étude cherche à démontrer que la psychanalyse peut être utile à l'historien — qui, dans ses études, poursuit un but historique —, et que, par conséquent, elle peut acquérir droit de cité parmi les autres disciplines et méthodes auxiliaires auxquelles l'historien fait appel pour comprendre et interpréter le sens et les causes des phénomènes historiques.
