ARCHAIC WHEELMADE CERAMICS FROM THE CAVE OF MARONEIA AND KREMASTO (ASAR TEPE), AEGEAN THRACE

Abstract

This article presents seventh and sixth century bc wheelmade ceramics excavated at two sites not far from the coastal area of Mount Ismaros in Aegean Thrace. It aims to introduce new evidence and to throw light on some aspects of the archaeology of the Archaic period in the area occupied by the Thracian Kikones. All the pottery sherds originate from the hilltop settlement at Kremasto (Asar Tepe) and the Cave of Maroneia, both located on the southern slopes of Mount Ismaros. Although both sites are situated in relative geographical proximity to one another, within the same ancient tribal area, they reveal two different patterns of human occupation and diversity in consumption patterns. The varying quantities and features of the wheelmade ceramics from both sites suggest that, while the limited sherds from the Kremasto settlement reflect, more likely, a sporadic import of luxurious objects by its inhabitants, the Grey and painted wares from the cave imply that they were used by people well acquainted with this type of pottery in their daily routine.

Αρχαϊκή τροχήλατη κεραμική από το Σπήλαιο της Μαρώνειας και το Κρεμαστό (Asar Tepe), Αιγαιακή Θράκη

Στο άρθρο αυτό παρουσιάζεται η τροχήλατη κεραμική του έβδομου και έκτου αιώνα π.χ. που προέρχεται από τις ανασκαφές σε δύο θέσεις οι οποίες βρίσκονται κοντά στην παράκτια περιοχή του όρους Ίσμαρος στην Αιγαιακή Θράκη. Στόχος της μελέτης είναι να προσφέρει νέα στοιχεία και να διαφωτίσει ορισμένες πτυχές της αρχαιολογίας της Αρχαϊκής περιόδου στην περιοχή που κατοικούσαν οι Θράκες Κίκονες. Όλα τα κεραμικά όστρακα προέρχονται από τον οικισμό στην κορυφή του λόφου στο Κρεμαστό (Asar Tepe), καθώς και από το Σπήλαιο της Μαρώνειας, θέσεις που βρίσκονται και οι δύο στις νότιες πλαγιές του όρους Ίσμαρος. Παρόλο που οι δύο θέσεις βρίσκονται σε σχετική γεωγραφική εγγύτητα, και εντός των ορίων της περιοχής του ίδιου αρχαίου φύλου, αντιπροσωπεύουν δύο διαφορετικά δείγματα ανθρώπινης κατοίκησης, καθώς και ποικιλομορφία στους τρόπους κατανάλωσης. Οι ποικίλες ποσότητες και τα χαρακτηριστικά των τροχήλατων κεραμικών και από τις δύο θέσεις υποδεικνύουν τα εξής: ενώ τα περιορισμένα όστρακα από τον οικισμό του Κρεμαστού πιθανότατα αντιπροσωπεύουν σποραδικές εισαγωγές πολυτελών αντικειμένων από τους κατοίκους του, οι τεφρές και γραπτές κατηγορίες κεραμικής από το σπήλαιο μαρτυρούν ότι είχαν χρησιμοποιηθεί από ανθρώπους καλά εξοικειωμένους με αυτά τα είδη κεραμικής στην καθημερινότητά τους.
