Can more protein help treat hypertension?
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 11 September 2013
In a nutshell
Observational evidence suggests higher protein intake may lower BP in hypertension.
There is also some RCT data supporting this, but not enough to warrant a ‘protein prescription’ for hypertensive patients. Holistic dietary approaches which include good quality protein along with less saturated fat seem a better way to go.
