Nutritional effects of CD not stemming directly from malabsorption include lower antioxidant status and cholesterol levels, disturbed bowel microflora and changes in body composition.
These may not fully correct with GFD treatment, so apart from being gluten-free, the diet must be nutrient-rich, as well as fostering a healthy weight.
