This bi-annual prize is awarded by the Asian Society of International Law for the best article by a younger scholar published in the Asian Journal of International Law (AsianJIL).
The winner receives £250 worth of Cambridge University Press books and membership of the Asian Society of International Law for one year.
2021 prize-winners
A joint first prize was awarded to Yuan Yi Zhu for the article ‘Suzerainty, Semi-Sovereignty, and International Legal Hierarchies on China’s Borderlands’ and to Vanshaj Ravi Jain for the article ‘Broken Boundaries: Border and Identity Formation in Post-Colonial Punjab’.
A joint second prize was awarded to Dita Liliansa for the article ‘The Necessity of Indonesia’s Measures to Sink Vessels for IUU Fishing in the EEZ’ and to Dilini Pathirana for the article ‘The Paradox of Chinese Investments in Sri Lanka’.
Third prize was awarded to Marco Longobardo for the article `The Legality of Closure on Land and Safe Passage Between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank’.
2019 prize-winners
First prize was awarded to two individuals: to Prabhakar Singh for the article "Of International Law, Semi-colonial Thailand, and Imperial Ghosts" published in Volume 9, Issue 1; and to Henrietta Zeffert for the article "The Lake Home: International Law and the Global Land Grab" published in Volume 8, Issue 2.
Second prize was awarded to Amit Kumar Sinha for the article "Non-Precluded Measures Provisions in Bilateral Investment Treaties of South Asian Countries" published in Volume 7, Issue 2.
Third prize was awarded to two individuals: to Eliana Cusato for the article "Overcoming the 'Logic of Exception': A Critique of the UN Security Council's Response to Environmental Damage from the 1990-1 Gulf War" published in Volume 9, Issue 1; and Ranyta Yusran for the article "The ASEAN Convention against Trafficking in Persons: A Preliminary Assessment" published in Volume 8, Issue 1.
2017 prize-winners
The inaugural Young Scholar Prize was awarded at the Society's 6th Biennial Conference in Seoul in 2017 to Victor KATTAN for the article Decolonizing the International Court of Justice: The Experience of Judge Sir Muhammad Zafrulla Khan in the South West Africa Cases published in Asian Journal of International Law, Volume 5, Issue 2, July 2015.
Two runners-up were Sun THATHONG for the article Lost in Fragmentation: The Traditional Knowledge Debate Revisited published in Asian Journal of International Law, Volume 4, Issue 2, July 2014 and Kalana SENARATNE for Internal Self-Determination in International Law: A Critical Third-World Perspective published in Asian Journal of International Law, Volume 3, Issue 2, July 2013.
