Law and Democracy in Asia
“Since the Asian Journal of Law and Society was founded in 2014, it has sought to promote, among other topics of research, the study of law and politics in Asia. We have selected, among articles published in our Journal in recent years, three articles relevant to this theme for publication in this virtual issue. Ling Li’s article analyses the “dual normative system” that characterizes the Party-State in the People’s Republic of China. Albert Chen’s article explores the legal context of the struggle for universal suffrage in Hong Kong that gave rise to the “Occupy Central” movement in 2014. The article co-authored by Pellegrina, Escresa and Garoupa studies the judicial behaviour of the Philippine Supreme Court in the context of the “policy space” “along a government-opposition divide”. Our Journal hopes to receive more contributions on such studies of the interaction and interface between law and politics in Asian jurisdictions in the foreseeable future.”
