Abstract

The problems and experiences of the largest American powder producer form an interesting case study of the effects of the Civil War upon business.

1 One of the oldest continuous enterprises on the American business scene. E. I. du Font de Nemours & Co. has placed its nineteenth century archives, the Old Stone Office Records, in the Eleutherian Mills Historical Library, Greenville, Delaware. Other major collections in the same repository that contain du Pont family papers and additional company materials are the Longwood Manuscripts, the Winterthur Collection, Alfred V. du Pont Papers, Lammot du Pont Papers, and the P. S. du Pont Collection. Its long association with the U.S. government can be seen in the numerous Du Font items in a wide range of records groups in the National Archives.
