* This song was written apparently about the year 1215, on occasion of the attempt to enforce strictly the prohibition of the marriages of the clergy. It was printed by Flacius IUyricus, with the title, “Sequuntur Rbythmi, quos post Synodum Lateranensem anno D. 1216, nobilis qui dam Anglus in Sacerdotalis conjugii favorem composuit.” Bale had pre yiously edited it from an old MS. at Oxford. In the Harleian MS. the whole has been erased, but it is still readable.
