A BIOASSAY APPARATUS FOR THE EVALUATION OF BLACK FLY (DIPTERA: SIMULIIDAE) LARVICIDES

Abstract

A bioassay apparatus using an aquarium filter to maintain water flow and to minimize contamination with black fly larvicides was developed. The apparatus is fairly compact, provides good visibility of and access to the test organisms and is assembled easily from materials readily available. It can be operated in a flow-through or a recirculation mode and can be used to assess pesticide effects on non-target stream invertebrates.

Résumé

Un appareil à bioessai utilisant un filtre à aquarium pour assurer la circulation de l'eau et minimiser la contamination due aux larvicides utilisés contre les mouches noires a été développé. L'appareil est assez compact, permet une bonne visibilité ainsi qu'un accès facile aux organismes testés, et il est facilement assemblé à partir de matériaux disponibles partout. L'appareil peut être opéré en mode circulation ouverte ou fermée et peut être utilisé pour tester les effets des pesticides sur les organismes non visés.
