INVENTORY OF APHIDS ON SEVEN CONIFER SPECIES IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INTRODUCED RED WOOD ANT, FORMICA LUGUBRIS (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE)1

Abstract

An inventory was taken of aphid species occurring on balsam fir, white spruce, larch, red pine, white pine, jack pine, and black spruce at two sites where the introduced red wood ant, Formica lugubris Zett., had been released. Twenty-one aphid species were found, all in the genus Cinara Curtis. Nine of these species, and possibly a tenth, were new records for Quebec. Observations on colony size and distribution on host trees, in ant infested and control blocks, were recorded.

Résumé

Aux deux sites d’introduction de Formica lugubris Zett., an inventaire des differentes espèces de pucerons vivant sur les essences conifériennes suivantes ont été observées; sapin baumier, épinette blanche, mélèze, pin rouge, pin blanc, pin gris et épinette noire. Vingt et une espèces de pucerons appartenant au genre Cinara Curtis ont été trouvées. Neuf de ces espèces et possiblement une dixième ont été enregistrées pour la première fois au Québec. Quelques observations sur la taille des colonies de pucerons et de leur distribution sur les essences mentionnées ont été notées et comparées avec des colonies de pucerons d’un bloc témoin.
