Revision of Cardiophorus (Coleoptera: Elateridae) species of eastern Canada and United States of America

Abstract

All Cardiophorus species found in Canada and the United States of America east of the Rocky Mountains are keyed and all but those with the majority of their ranges west of the Rocky Mountains are revised. Eleven species are recognized, three of which are new to science (C. catskillensissp. nov., C. destinensissp. nov., and C. panamapolissp. nov.). Cardiophorus floridae Candèze and C. angustatus Blanchard are synonymized under C. convexus (Say). All 11 are described and taxonomically important characters are presented. Distribution maps are presented for each species. The following lectotypes are designated for species that were described from more than one specimen without former holotype designation: C. angustatus, C. floridae, C. erythropus Erichson, C. gagates Erichson, C. togatus Horn, C. robustus LeConte, C. convexulus LeConte, and C. amictus Melsheimer. The following neotypes were designated to replace destroyed type specimens: C. cardisce (Say) and C. convexus.

Résumé

Une clé d'identification est présentée pour les espèces du genre Cardiophorus du Canada et des États-Unis d'Amerique que l'on retrouve à l'est des montagnes Rocheuses. Toutes les espèces, sauf celles dont la majeure partie de leur distribution est à l'ouest des Rocheuses sont révisées. Onze espèces sont reconnues, dont trois sont nouvelles à la science (C. catskillensissp. nov., C. destinensissp. nov. et C. panamapolissp. nov.). Cardiophorus floridae Candèze et C. angustatus Blanchard sont des synonymes de C. convexus (Say). Les 11 espèces sont décrites et les caractères taxonomiques importants sont présentés. Les cartes de distribution sont présentées pour chaque espèce. Les lectotypes suivants ont été désignés pour les espèces qui ont été décrites à partir de plusieurs spécimens sans avoir été assignées à un holotype a priori: C. angustatus, C. floridae, C. erythropus Erichson, C. gagates Erichson, C. togatus Horn, C. robustus LeConte, C. convexulus LeConte et C. amictus Melsheimer. Les néotypes suivants ont été désignés pour les espèces dont le type est détruit: C. cardisce (Say) et C. convexus.
